World Poker Tour

Well, once again I was watching one of my shows this weekend that I regularly land on, World Poker Tour (WPT). The WPT is another show that I have learned to love. The WPT is a show that covers the action at the final table of a (typically) texas-hold’em poker tournaments. There usually is six people sitting around a poker table trying to win all the chips. The winners can take home hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.

There is much debate about the origins of poker and how long its been played around the world. Some people date it back to the 15th century in Germany. Modern poker tournaments date back to 1970 and have gained recent popularity from televised tournaments (WPT) and internet gambling.

I originally didn’t get the purpose of the WPT. It’s the same as watching paint dry. They just sit around playing cards and are starring at each other. How can this be any fun? Well, I’m glad you asked…

There are many aspects of televised poker that can make it exciting. First off, you can learn some real tips on how to play poker from watching the professionals. They can teach you the lingo, what the odds are in certain situations and most importantly “when to hold’em and when to fold’em”. Knowing more about the game can seriously improve your chances when you sit down at the green felt.

Another exciting aspect of televised poker, you get to see the action at the table. The show typically shows everyone’s hand at the table. Of course, no one else knows what each other has, but we are lucky enough to have that window into their world. It is like having X-ray vision or gambling omnipotence. You can sit there and yell at the screen, “Dude, Fold!” “But doesn’t this give away the ending / who is going to win?” No it doesn’t. Often someone that has the best hand will get beaten out by someone making strong bets and a good bluff. It is the ultimate mind game.

One of the most exciting aspects of professional poker is the characters that play. You have people that play it cold and others that can’t be shut up. You have modest players and then you have total braggarts. After awhile, you learn your favorites and least favorites. Much like your local baseball team or favorite college team, you start pulling for your pony to flop the nuts.

This weekend’s episode of the WPT was the Queens of Poker #3. It was a women only event that featured some of the best ladies of poker. I grabbed my attention enough to watch the last 4 players whittle down to a winner. According to the WPT, only 1 out of every 20 poker players is women. That was surprising to me. Some of the best players I played against have been women.

Some people have equated watching professional poker to watching professional golf. Surprisingly, poker typically has hirer payouts to the winners. Quite often, an off-the-street amateur can walk in and win a WPT event. That just doesn’t happen to often in golf. In poker, you get to listen to the table chatter. That only happens during skins matches during televised golf.

Which do you like to watch better?

I personally enjoy both poker and golf. Both take incredible concentration to be good at and win, but both can be played by everyday amateurs like you and me. There is nothing better than a round of golf with good friends or a couple hands of poker over some beers.

Chaos captured in a glass…

Have you ever been put into a completely random, spontaneous situation, and took the reins and lead that pony into uncharted territory? This past weekend, Midd13M4n was in just such a situation. I found myself in the same town as a cousin whom I do not see very often, and had the opportunity to tip a few pints with him. The randomness was that we were in town for completely different reasons, and both of us ended up with an evening free. When we both heard that the other was in town earlier in the day, we each thought of calling on each other to grab a few beers and catch up on life. My cousin, Jon, brought along a cousin of his (other side of his family from me), and so Jon was the one and only intersection point between me his cousin Dan. Now, I have been in that position before, where I am the only intersection point between two people, and usually that is an extremely awkward point. More often than not, the two people end up hating each other, and I’m pulled between the two. Thankfully, we came to discover similar tastes in music, an appreciation for good beer, and a deep fascination for the financial markets among other things. After numerous pints of quality beer and several hours of stellar conversations, we were forced to part ways. Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there, for we will be actively sharing music and probably communicating via email. Yes, I have left out many, many details, but those are the boring parts. This life of ours is a huge non-linear equation, and the chaos of our daily life is sometimes deliciously complex and spontaneous. I rather enjoy, usually in retrospect, those strange and random situations that I occasionally find myself in.

What are your most entertaining random situations? Did you find out you work with a long-lost ex who is now of the opposite gender due to some “special surgery”? Do you go to the same grocery store as a childhood friend that you haven’t seen in 15 years and enjoy the same brand of kumquat? Who knows, your random situation may be someone else’s daily existence!

On a side note, Dan and Jon were in town attending a memorial service for Dan’s sister Vicki who died earlier this year. My sincerest condolences to their entire family, and may Vicki find peace.

What’s new at FupDuckTV.com

As some of you may have noticed, FupDuckTV.com is going through some changes and improvements.  I want to take a moment and thank everyone that has visited our site.  We are starting to recieve emails and comments on a regular basis and we really appreciate your input.  Please keep them coming.

We have recently changed our main page to be something more than just a basic white page with a few links on it.  I hope you all enjoy the look and feel of the new page.  It is not 100% complete yet, but we are working on it as fast as we can.  Thanks for being patient with us.

Some of the coming additions to the main page include an updated ‘contact’ page that will include a way to send emails directly to us.  No more having to mess with those clunky email programs like outlook and firebird.  An updated ‘about us’ page that actually talks “about us” (who would have guessed).  If you have any questions about us that you want answered sent them in now.  We also plan to include RSS feeds from our blogs right on the front page.  You will be able to subscripe to these RSS feeds with any of your RSS feedreaders.

We are slowly tweeking our video casts as well.  Per your requests, we are shortening our format.  We understand that devoting 45 to 60 minutes of your week to watching us is not very likely or realistic.  Look for more funny action packed shorter episodes in the coming weeks.  Please send us suggestions for new theme episodes and topics to discuss.  We are here to entertain you.

We are going to start running some contests along with our shows.  We are looking for some suggestions for prizes to give out.  Here is a poll that we are running to see what you think:

What type of prizes should we give away?

Hooky, but not really.

It is now closing in on the end of April. I just looked at the calendar and realized that I have not had a day off since New Years Day (all of you government employees can wipe that smug look off of your collective faces – some of us actually WORK for our paychecks!) So, yeah, Midd13M4n really feels the need for a day off. And then I got thinking…

What is the best way to play hooky from work without actually taking a sick day or vacation day or even having to make up the time later? Some people rely on training classes to get out of work without really taking off from work. The problem with relying on training to be your out is someone may ask you a question based on the training. Busted! Another low-impact method is hiding in the corporate library doing “research”, or perhaps hiding in the tech lab “testing some new products”. Usually these places are rather deserted most of the time, so a 45 minute nap isn’t out of the question. Killing 4 to 8 hours there isn’t the best idea, though, because they’re usually easily accessible by everyone and so you can have the entire company walking in on you while you’re sawing logs and drooling all over the fiscal year 1987 purchase orders. The business trip boondoggle has always been a favorite of mine since usually you can eat on the company’s dime, as well as get out of the office for a day or two. The biggest downside to the business trip is being away from home and all your stuff. Probably the best scheme I stumbled upon is the golf outing or extended lunch with the boss and other members of management. To make this scheme work, you really need to buddy up to your boss, dare I say, possibly even brown-nose a bit. Yes, even play that political game, especially if it endears you to your management chain. There are some benefits to pandering to the upper echelons, and really, what’s the difference between most jobs and prostitution? Most of us have sold our souls long, long ago… If you can pull off the buddy-buddy management trick as a worker bee, management almost always feels compelled to pay for you. That’s why they make the BIG bux, plus typically they know the pittance they’re paying you. It’s a good strategy, especially if you’re mostly deaf so you do not have to listen to the inane chatter of management-speak and buzz-word bingo. And you’ve sold your soul long ago, anyway, so it is not like you’ll feel guilty, right?

What are –your– favorite ways to get out of work without really burning a day of PTO (paid time off)? If I really like them, I may actually use them myself…
